Potted Trees | Container Trees

The bulk of the dwarfed potted trees which are called bonsai are developed from normal nursery stock or from rather dwarfed trees found in a natural environment. This is where the art of bonsai lies.

Let us consider the second group, the trees brought from natural habitats.

From mountains and ragged woods, an extreme amount of material is dug and brought to the coaching beds of dwarfed potted trees experts annually.

There it is still for many years to be established, trained and ultimately "made-up." In the simplicity of natural, partly dwarfed trees, there’s need for some wires and a little coaching. Trees that have lost the bigger part of their roots are a much more serious problem. Many of them die due to their insufficient root system, especially if the 1st summer is hot and dry. To explain, I can now describe the collection of Jap Black Pine. On the mountain of Shodoshima or Shodo Island which is found in the Seto Inland Sea Countrywide Park a numerous number of Jap Black Pine for dwarfed potted trees have been dug by pro collectors. Many famous and valuable dwarfed Black Pines were produced from the material picked up here. I write this at my home which can be found at the foot of the Shodoshima Mountain.

On the islet opposite my place a Black Pine was picked up many years back, which became the most valuable and dearest of all dwarfed potted Black Pines. There are still some stories or legends circulated concerning it. Seeing the spot thru Bald Cypress ( Taxodium distichum ) and Cypress-Pine ( Callitris glauca ) in the acclimatizing Gardens as I write, I vividly recall the times when collectors came to the island in autumn and spring. The surface rock is granite. Higher up on the mountain the rocks weather into coarse whitish sand and the layer of soil is awfully thin ; at lower levels there’s a bigger depth of soil and always some moisture.

The district is one of the lowest in rainfall in Japan. The summer is extremely hot and nearly bone dry. On the higher parts of both sides of the ridge, Black Pine dominates ; next comes Red Pine ( Pinte densiflora ) and in far smaller numbers the Needle Juniper, Rhododendron reticulatum, Rhododendron kaemferi, Bush Clover ( Lespedeza bicolor ) and Balloon-flower ( Platycodon grandijlo-rum ). The pines are really dwarfed in size but in most situations they’re older than the bigger ones seen at the lower levels on the mountain.

3 feet is often regarded as the maximum height of dwarfed potted trees. To keep in the golden rule of the art of bonsai, the bigger trees are commonly sharply pruned. For example, on discovering a particularly dwarfed pine 5 or more feet tall with a trunk 5 or extra inches in diameter, if the lower branches are 3 feet from the ground and beautiful in form ( or guarantee to be so if trained ), the higher portion of the main trunk is sawed off.

For such picked up stock the art of bonsai needs coaching by wire after a year or 2, when the plants are well established.
